Chapter 3: Reading Skills
What you need to learn in this chapter
This chapter aims to develop students' abilities to read and understand a variety of linear and non-linear texts, using both print and non-print materials. Students will be guided on how to apply different strategies to construct meaning from texts, such as using contextual clues (anaphoric and cataphoric clues) and identifying idiomatic expressions.
The chapter focuses on strengthening word attack skills, including how to understand unfamiliar words by recognizing the surrounding context. Students will practice reading and understanding phrases and sentences from both linear and non-linear texts, while applying techniques such as sequencing, predicting, and identifying the main ideas and supporting details.
Students will also refine their dictionary skills, learning how to recognize abbreviations and interpret the meaning of words within context. Additionally, they will be encouraged to read independently for both information and enjoyment, with guidance on engaging with both fiction and non-fiction texts.
By the end of the chapter, students will be able to confidently read and comprehend a variety of texts, applying a range of strategies to improve their understanding and enjoyment of reading.
